Beyond Marks: Are Students Developing Deeper Understanding?
A 2024–2026 look at competency-based assessment in Indian schools and the classroom evidence parents can use to judge whether marks represent real understanding.

A student scores 91 in science. What, exactly, does the number tell us? It may reflect careful study, accurate recall, sound reasoning, clear written expression, and disciplined revision. It may also conceal an uneven picture: confident reproduction of familiar answers, uncertainty in a new problem, or practical work completed by following instructions without understanding why each step mattered.
Marks are not meaningless. They summarise performance under stated conditions, allow comparison against standards, and can show improvement over time. The mistake is to ask one number to carry more information than it contains. A report card is an important record; it is not a full account of a mind at work.
From CBSE’s 2024 increase in competency-focused questions to the curriculum changes visible in 2026, Indian assessment has been moving toward application, analysis, and learning outcomes. The direction is sound. The remaining challenge is classroom depth: if teaching continues to reward imitation, a more ‘competency-based’ question paper alone cannot create deeper understanding.

What marks can and cannot tell us
A mark becomes meaningful in context. Ninety per cent on a carefully designed paper that asks students to interpret data, connect ideas, and write independently is different evidence from ninety per cent on a predictable recall test. The number is the same; the intellectual work is not.
Reliability also matters. One test may be affected by health, anxiety, timing, or a narrow set of questions. A pattern across quizzes, oral responses, laboratory work, written assignments, and later recall tells us more. This is why good teachers collect evidence during learning rather than waiting for one terminal examination.
None of this requires abandoning grades. It requires modesty about them. Marks can report how a student performed on assessed work. They cannot, alone, report curiosity, persistence, breadth of reading, ability to collaborate, willingness to revise, or whether the knowledge will still be available six months later.
What deeper understanding looks like in a classroom
A student who understands can usually do more than repeat the teacher’s example. They can explain the idea in their own words, produce another example, recognise when the idea does not apply, and connect it with something learned earlier. They may still make mistakes, but their mistakes reveal a line of thought rather than random guessing.
Transfer is the clearest test. Can a percentage learned in mathematics be used to interpret a discount, a survey, or a change in rainfall? Can the idea of evidence from science inform a claim in social science? Can a literary interpretation be defended with precise language from the text rather than a memorised ‘central idea’?
Deeper learning is not always visibly dramatic. It often appears as a better question, a corrected diagram, a student pausing to estimate before calculating, or a second draft that resolves an ambiguity. Schools need routines that notice these small signs rather than waiting only for exhibitions and prize-winning projects.
The competency-based assessment shift since 2024
CBSE’s April 2024 circular on assessment and evaluation continued the Board’s move away from rote recall. For Classes IX and X, it increased the share of competency-focused questions in theory examinations to 50 per cent, with constructed-response questions forming the remainder. For Classes XI and XII, competency-focused questions rose to 40 per cent for that session.
The National Curriculum Framework makes the underlying distinction clear: assessment of learning measures achievement; assessment for learning guides teaching; and assessment as learning helps students reflect on their own progress. A school needs all three. A final examination cannot tell a teacher tomorrow morning which misconception needs attention; a quick classroom question can.
Policy language, however, does not automatically change lesson habits. If students are taught through model answers and then surprised with unfamiliar applications, assessment has moved faster than instruction. Competency has to be practised in ordinary periods through questions, examples, experiments, writing, and feedback. It cannot simply be added during the final revision week.
Projects need intellectual ownership
A colourful model can conceal very little thinking. So can a long file assembled from downloaded text. Project work becomes educational when the student faces a choice: what to investigate, what evidence to gather, which material to use, how to interpret an unexpected result, and what to change after feedback.
Teachers can make ownership visible through brief conversations. Why did you choose this method? What failed? Which source was most useful? What would you do with another week? A student who made the work can usually answer with specificity, including the awkward parts.
The final product still matters. Care, accuracy, and presentation are worth teaching. But the assessment should include process: notes, drafts, trials, peer critique, and reflection. This prevents polish from receiving all the credit while thought remains invisible.
Designing lessons for explanation, application, and revision
A strong lesson usually moves between different kinds of mental work. The teacher may explain a new concept clearly, ask students to retrieve an earlier idea, model one example, invite comparison between two methods, and then let students attempt a problem without immediate rescue. Direct teaching and inquiry are not enemies; each has a place.
Feedback should tell the student what to do next. ‘Careless’ is a label. ‘You selected the correct formula but did not state why these values belong in it’ is guidance. Students also need an opportunity to use the guidance. Correction without another attempt produces a marked notebook, not necessarily improved understanding.
Spacing and return matter. A concept that appears once in September and vanishes after the test is likely to fade. Short retrieval weeks later, a fresh application in another unit, or a cumulative question reveals whether learning has endured.
Questions to ask
- Can students explain why a method works, not only reproduce its steps?
- Do assessments include unfamiliar but fair applications?
- Does written feedback lead to a second attempt or revision?
- Are projects assessed for decisions and evidence as well as presentation?
- Does the school revisit important ideas after the unit test?
What parents can ask beyond ‘How many marks?’
After an assessment, ask the child which question required the most thought, what error they now understand, and what they would do differently. These questions do not lower expectations. They direct attention toward the process that can improve the next result.
At a parent–teacher meeting, ask to see examples of the tasks behind the grade and how feedback is used. A school should be able to describe the student’s current strengths with some precision: perhaps accurate calculation but weak interpretation, strong ideas but thin evidence, or good oral understanding that is not yet visible in writing.
The aim is not to replace one obsession with another set of fashionable terms. It is to make the meaning of achievement clearer. Marks deserve respect when they are honest evidence of substantial work. Students deserve more than a number when the number leaves the most important questions unanswered.
